Salvadoran Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and it’s one of those things that we find is better in El Salvador than other places in the world.  It’s not just the day of love here, it’s El Dia de Amor y Amistad (The Day of Love and Friendship).  Whereas single people in the US lament the arrival of Valentine’s Day (for various reasons), in El Salvador, it’s an all-inclusive holiday where no one is left out and everyone is gets to participate.  This is not just a holiday where men have to buy their girlfriends or wives flowers and chocolates, men and women alike are expected to show their appreciation to all of their closest friends.

During Valentine’s Day, the streets fill with vendors selling all sorts of little trinkets: merengues, chocolate covered strawberries, rainbow colored marshmellows and more.  All of these different treats range in price from about twenty-five to fifty cents – the perfect price range to buy one for all of your loved ones.

And that’s exactly what everyone in El Salvador does – anyone you consider a friend gets a little gift.  It’s a great way to show people you care about them and it’s not just for romance. Friends fill baskets full of little presents and walk through neighborhoods giving them to all of their friends and neighbors.

So join in the fun and show someone that you care with some sweet treats!
